Who Should Replace VDS?

For some peeps, this might seem like it’s coming out of the blue. But for a few years now, I’ve noticed that Edwin Van Der Sar’s game has become riddled with occasional errors. Now don’t get me wrong, I think that he’s a good goalkeeper and he’ll forever be remembered fondly by Man Utd fans for this. But with him just turned 38, it must be time for a new goalkeeper to be found. Although he has said he will review his future at Christmas, it still surely must be time.
First off, we must look within the club. Tomasz Kuszczak is a good goalkeeper, when he has been called upon lately he’s done a competent job, but I don’t think he’s the star ‘keeper that a big club needs.
Then there’s Ben Foster. When he played in the 1-0 away to Derby County last season he had an incredible match. If it weren’t for him in goals Man Utd would have drawn or even lost that match. But the question still remains as to whether he can maintain his fitness, as throughout his short-career he has been plagued with all sorts of long-term injuries.
While it probably remains likely that Fergie will choose from within the club for VDS’ replacement, for fun’s sake, let’s take a a wee bit o’ time to think outside of Man Utd.
There has been talk recently all over the place that Fergie is taking a look at Valladolid’s 19 year old goalkeeper Sergio Asenjo but there’ll probably be craploads of clubs after him.
Who do you think would be a perfect and realistic replacement for Van Der Sar outside of Man Utd?

i dont know about kuszczak…that guy makes me nervous in a gomes sort of way…like he can’t keep his mind in the game then gets pant shit terrified whenever the ball is in the box. ochoa isnt going anywhere that isnt spain or mexico i dont think, he’s a god in mexico and his best hasnt even started so i think that’s kind of a pipe dream. mandanda is solid but i dont know if marseille would be willing to part with him cause of how much he does for them. the 19 yo sounds intriguing but i mean he’s just 19…i wonder how he would do with the pressure.

i had been thinking about this too and i was thinking either guillermo ochoa. i don’t know how intent he is on staying in mexico, but i think if a big club like man u were to offer him a first team spot and the money we have, along with the pressure he would feel from the mexico national team folks, i think he would make the move. another person is artur boruc, except for his personality could be a liability, but then again eric cantona did thrive at united.

Two things…
1) The replacement must be quite competent with his feet. I believe this was Tim Howard’s downfall. United love to utilize their GK’s feet to maintain possession, and whomever they elect as a replacement must be equally as capable.
2) Let’s also not pull a post-World Cup 2002 decision and go with a flash-in-the-pan player (Fabien Barthez, I’m looking in your direction)…We need an established personality who could handle the stress… that said, I say we stick it out with Foster and see what he can do in a full season

I also would suggest Steve Mandanda from Olympique Marseille. I live here now and get to see him week in and week out. He is a great goalkeeper.

for me kuszcack will always be a reserve keeper and i doubt the capabilities of foster too on top level since he’s injured half the year..i think utd should and will buy a quality keeper next summer.does anyone know how good are the likes of 1.manuel neuer of germany 2.oscar ustari of argentina 3.igor akinfeev of russia{he looked good in euros thouugh!!!}

From what I’ve seen of Neuer his game is mixed with the sublime and the absurd. But he’s only young so there would be time to fix that. As far as I’ve seen Akinfeev is a cracking player. But he’s still young. I think that Utd really need an experienced, but not old keeper. Someone around late 20s would be ideal. Can’t think of anyone though…

I’m also for Guillermo Ochoa. There were heavy links to him joining United more than a year ago, but his performances are crazy good. It’s just hard for him to prove himself with the crap defense that his current club has
