United Draw Inter: Mancunians Mumble Obscenities Under Their Breath
By: Taylor Rockwell | December 19th, 2008So United will have a tough time in the Champions League Round of Sixteen. It was announced today that the reigning English and European Champions would be traveling to Italy in the near future to meet up with a high-powered Inter Milan side led by Jose Mourinho.
Not that the other English teams are any happier. Chelsea drew Juventus, and Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the next round. Here’s a full listing of all the draws:
Chelsea v Juventus
Villarreal v Panathinaikos
Sporting Lisbon v Bayern Munich
Atlético Madrid v FC Porto
Lyon v Barcelona
Real Madrid v Liverpool
Arsenal v AS Roma
Internazionale v Manchester United
I’m not particularly thrilled with this one. The 11% of you who voted for Inter in the poll may be happy, but I can’t help but shake the feeling that this is the worst possible opponent we could have gotten. Mourinho will see anything short of winning the Champions League as a failure for Inter, and will stop at nothing to come out the victor. Combine that with his desire to show the English media that he is “the greatest manager on earth” and I expect we will see some fireworks in the first leg of the competition (to be played in Milan).
Although, if one were forced to rationalize it, one could point out that United went up against a (some might say) superior Inter side during their 98/99 Treble season and, well, we know how that went. So perhaps drawing a world class squad is just the kick in the pants Manchester need to really fire them home down the stretch. Obviously, the season has produced a mixed bag of results thus far, and United haven’t always looked as determined to retain their title as they did last season. If there’s anyone that can bring out Fergie’s wrath and subsequent desire to win, it’s Old Jose.
Until then, enjoy the Club World Cup Championship this weekend! Come on you Reds!

There’s no way you’ll have a tough time.
Inter are garbage in Europe. Utd is a MUCH better team.Posted from

So happy we didn’t end up with Barca, they are having a seriously monster season.

Mele, I feel you reverse jinxing us, and I don’t like it… I’m going on record as saying, regardless of whatever the pundits say, the matches with Inter will be tough… remember in the semis last year when the general consensus was that Barca were garbage? We won that series 1-0 on aggregate… All I’m saying is that I’m not counting any chickens…

its gonna be a bitch really. they seem to match up well with us and you know mourinho has some shit up his sleeve. this knockout round seems much more intense matchup wise than last year. should be awesome

The good thing about this draw is we don’t have to play them until Feb. By then we’ll know whether or not United have gotten it together. If we played now, I would definately give Inter the edge. Two months from now, with Ronaldo shaking off the rust and Berba integrated into the squad, who knows?

Why does Ronaldo need 5 months to shake off the rust? That’s just garbage

I believe Kevin meant that literally… with all the tanning oil and hair product that Slave will cover himself with during the winter holidays, he may actually develop physical rust on his body…
