United 3 – Chelsea 0 : Match Highlights and Lots of Hyperbole
By: Taylor Rockwell | January 11th, 2009As much as I would like to comment on how amazingly beautiful this match was in every way, I spent this morning standing on a frozen pitch going through the final trials to get my coaching license. So, it was only later this afternoon when I was able to sit down with a pint in hand (this happens whenever United play regardless of the time), turn on the television, and watch a newly invigorated United side CRUSH the Gene Hackman led Blues. I would really like to say a lot more, but I will refer to Richard Jolly for a more fitting description:

His summer smile had waned before winter set in. Now the Premier League’s most famous moustache flanks a grimace. While Luiz Felipe Scolari scowled, it was understandable his sunny disposition has disappeared. This was as comprehensive a win as can be imagined between title rivals. To borrow the cliché, Chelsea were lucky to get nil. They did not have a shot near target, let alone on it, and Edwin van der Sar was as much of a spectator as the watching Jose Mourinho. He built a side on secure enough foundations to continue earning results for more than a year after his departure. Now there are signs the team is falling apart. Their defence, normally structured so solidly, was breached three times, by Nemanja Vidic, Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov. Their midfield was strangely shaky, their attack often non-existent. Chelsea, in short, were utterly uninspired.
And so now, with victories in the two games in hand, United could be one point clear at the top of the table. All talk of quadruples and trebles and whatnot are lovely, but what is more comforting is the fact that I continue to believe we haven’t seen the best of United this season. So, with half the season gone, the squad not yet at its peak, and many games left to play, this season (which I once felt would be a crashing disaster) could yet bear fruit. And were Sir Alex to go level on titles with another EPL championship this season, it would be all the sweeter to know that it was won at the expense (primarily) of Liverpool.
United 1 – Chelsea 0 (45′ – Vidic)
United 2 – Chelsea 0 (63′ – Rooney)
United 3 – Chelsea 0 (87′ – Berbatov)
Oh… and loads of respect to some of the visiting Chelsea fans who, in an obvious show of classiness, thought it would be wise to spend a portion of the match telling Slave: “You should have died in the tunnel.” I can’t wait for the next charity match when they mock invalids… or the inevitable firebombing of an orphanage… but I guess that’s what you get when your captain drunkenly laughed at American tourists on September 11, 2001. Classy indeed!

FYI… that article took 45 minutes to upload… gotta love having two roommates who are permanently on Xbox Live… I believe they’ve single-handedly won World War II 48,926 times… truly, they are the real heroes…

i thought united looked pretty crap up until the 1st goal…the second half they came out looking too embarrass some dudes and they did. seeing how they looked compared to liverpool this weekend and maybe rafa will keep his little scripted diatribes in his pocket. shit was so awesome.

Yeah… I’m getting there… I still don’t know how I feel about Berba v Tevez… wish there was a way we could put them both in there with Rooney… I guess it’s better that that is the dilemma rather than not have enough goal scorers…

How mad would you have been if Vidic didn’t score that header right after that trick corner by Rooney. In reference to your roommates if they aren’t fighting then who is, true Americans if you ask me…..

You guys definitely crushed us, so fair play. But I must say I didn’t think United were really that great today. It was just that Chelsea was egregious. A listless, utterly disgraceful showing.
With that being said, I’ve got my cash on you guys rolling to the title.

What are everyones thoughts on possibly playing 4-3-3 with Tevez Rooney and Berba?
I think it would be a great thing to try out against maybe West Brom.
I don’t think United can have enough “ways to play”. Today we went with our standard 4-4-2. But with Berba I think we could easily play a modified 4-5-1 with CR7 roaming free and Berba up front.
Throw Rooney and Tevez up front and you’ve got an extremely quick and pacey modified 4-6 almost.
Just a thought, but I would love to see a 4-3-3 with Rooney, Berba, and Tevez up top for a match or two.

I want to know why Vidic didn’t do his crazy bird/windmill high knee celebration again. That shit was fucking hilarious.

1) Shawn, if we hadn’t scored, a homeless drifter was prolly gonna get stabbed last night…
2) I like the idea of trying the 4-3-3, but who starts in the midfield? Slave, Carrick, and ???? Giggs? Ando? Park?
3) Nobobomo, I agree… that celebration was the highlight of my season (both because of the goal itself and the resulting celebration). Props to you for giving it the most accurate description possible.Posted from

Honestly, a three man midfield would be a perfect place for Hargo. He would fit in well on the right and provide some steel as well as qualtiy service.
I think a midfield of Park, Carrick and CR7 would work well. Or, we could rest CR7 and play Mr. Giggs.

Haha loved Rooney scoring right through A. Cole’s legs. And the Vidic and Berba show on the 3rd goal was fun.
