The Title Winning Season in Review: Reading (A) September 23rd
By: Nick | June 1st, 2007Having suffered the first defeat (and dropped points) the previous week, United would look to pick themselves up for the visit to Premiership newcomers Reading — where the crowd was sure to be in full voice to welcome the club many home fans consider their biggest visitors of the season.
A second half strike from Cristiano Ronaldo would cancel out an earlier Reading penalty — rescuing a point United would have been quite happy with considering Reading’s decent showing.
The personal transformation of Ronaldo was now firmly under way, and he again put in the type of performance that would win him two Premier League Player of the Year awards. As The Guardian noted:
“He was outstanding on Saturday, using his full repertoire of tricks and flicks to bewitch the Reading defense before salvaging a draw for United with a sublime solo goal. He could have celebrated the strike by cupping his hand to his ear, placing a finger over his lips or running in front of the home fans who had heckled his every touch. Instead the only gesture he made was towards his team-mates, throwing his hands in the air as if to demand more from those around him”.
The video below is shot from a Reading fan in the stands — and gives a nice perspective of the action from an unfamiliar vantage point.
