Tevez Sort of, Kind of… Actually Doesn’t Want to Leave United

By: Taylor Rockwell | January 6th, 2009

It has been reported in the headlines of many papers around the globe that Carlos Tevez is ready to quit Manchester United. Such a statement shouldn’t be all that surprising, given the moderate playing time Tevez has seen in recent matches and the constant state of upheaval regarding his new contract. And yet, such reports tend to stretch the truth.

In an interview with Argentinian based Radio del Plata, Tevez stated, “‘I didn’t like him (Ferguson) saying I didn’t like the offer I was made because neither my agent nor me were given one. I don’t know anything on my future. United know what they must pay if they want me to stay. I want to stay but the club have not made any offer. I’ve been waiting for them for a year and a half.” Not exactly a demand for an immediate transfer, is it?

In fact, I’m surprised Tevez is keeping such a (relatively) level head in the media. Last season he was an integral part of a double winning side. Now? Well, he gets matches in the Carling Cup and gets a run out when Rooney is suspended and Berba is resting. Such is the drama/difficulty of having three world class strikers on one roster.

However, since joining from West Ham two seasons ago, Tevez has been a workhorse for the Red Devils, finding opportunities in places Louis Saha never even dreamed possible. However, the fact that United and Tevez have not yet reached a deal must be indicative of how he figures into the Ferguson Long Term Plan. Which is to say that he doesn’t. What seems more likely is that Tevez represents a Carlos Quieroz signing and Berba represents the Fergie model of doing business, and that we all know who’s going to win in that conflict.

Tevez has been a hard working, dedicated finisher, and for him to be treated in such a nefarious way by United is sad, sad thing for fans who have steadfastly supported Fergie in all his transfer decisions. Tevez DESERVES a new contract, DESERVES increased playing time, and DESERVES consistent opportunities to prove himself in clutch moments.

Do Utd still have to pay some sort of transfer fee for him? I still don’t fully understand his situation at Old Trafford.

I believe (could be wrong) that United took him on loan with a set amount owed per season (around £6 per year). At the end of the two years, we have a fixed price option to buy him for an additional £20 million.

So, at the end of the season, regardless of what other clubs offer, if we meet the contract demands, he’s ours. However, Fergie & Co continue to balk at the £20 million or so, and talks have subsequently stalled…
