Saudi Telecom Set To Replace AIG…
By: Wayne Farry | November 19th, 2008
It’s been floating around the interweb for a while and here it is. It’s been reported that United are expected to announce Saudi Telecom as the new shirt sponsors, replacing the crippled American Insurance Group. AIG is being saved by the American government who are pumping taxpayer’s cash into it. How many US taxpayers want to inadvertently sponsor a foreign football team? Not many, I imagine…
United already have a 5 year sponsorship deal in place with Saudi Telecom for non-shirt sponsorship that is worth around €12M and is thought to be the biggest non-shirt sponsorship deal in British football history. So I’d expect this to be United’s biggest shirt sponsorship deal ever and if my mind serves me correctly, therefore the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in British football history.
Its a good deal for Utd, in my opinion, more money and even more exposure in the Middle East. And it’s another foothold for the Middle East in European football.
Thank God we can get rid of that ghastly AIG logo off the front of the jersey now too, hazaah!

Well I’m not quite sure if the logo of Saudi Telecom will be on the jersey or just the name. Looking at the logo, I’d prefer just the name..

I dont mind AIG to be honest. I preferred vodafone though. Not too keen on Saudi Telecom, but I’m sure I will like it if its put on to a united shirt.

I’d love the Arabic writing to be on as well.

I am not too keen on other languages.. like the Spurs shirts last year, with the Chinese written on it..not that good..I bet people from middle east would love it..
Other news.. Berbatov injures his hamstring during the first half of Bulgaria game…

Well, I’m not so happy for that logo on the shirt, the logo is fine, but it does not fit with the shirt. However, the name is a littlebit long and i’m not fan of only the name on the shirt, rather a logo.. But in this case it does not fit. Vodefone was very nice. I’m very excited anyway…

With all the problems arising from the Middle East, I’m not too keen on anything from Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, etc being a sponsor. I’d rather keep AIG for all its troubles, or get someone else, but that’s just me.

I don’t have anything against Saudi Arabia, I just am concerned there might be some backlash over it. I don’t know how people would react here in the US if I were walking around with Saudi Telecom advertising on my shirt. There might not be any comments at all. I never know how to measure my own people here in the US on stuff like this. I suppose the Saudis would generate far less negativity than Iraq or Iran would, for example. I wouldn’t stop following Man U over a sponsor however.
