Ronaldo Will Continue His Servitude in a Red Shirt. So Says Sir Alex.

By: Nick | July 19th, 2008

So that’s it?

After weeks of immature and pathetic hints to the contrary by Ronaldo himself, after endless opinion from his mother, step-father, brother, sister, national team coach, current teammates, possible future teammates, ex-United greats, newspaper columnists, Sepp Blatter, Berndt Schuster, Ramon Calderon, the Spanish press, blogs, messageboards — all that mattered was the opinion of one man, sitting in a Rugby stadium.

What a seemingly bizarre end to a very strange few weeks.

You guys are in trouble for real. CR7 is not gonna play with the passion he once had, trust me. I see Chelsea taking over your league and knocking you to second, maybe even third.

If you dont play him, your also in trouble. Im sorry but with the exception of Rooney, CR7 is your best player. You guys did great this year and thats awesome, a double in modern football is very impressive indeed.

You guys are the team to beat, all im saying is that it looks like next year… your gonna get beat.

Cristiano is one the best players in the world, but that doesn’t make him the smartest kid on the block. He needs to show some respect to the club and the people who made him big. There is no way Manchester U will be in trouble next season. Chelski is a Russian Circus with unlimited funds but that doesn’t make them Champions…it puts them in the group of Mad-houses like Barca, Roma, Liverpool and Real. In the meantime, Manchester U maintains their usual stability identifying necessary improvements to the squad (like Arsenal, Juventus, Milan). That’s the soundest recipe for success.

ASR: perhaps, but personally I doubt it. Chelsea are in even more turmoil than we “apparently are”. When Mourinho came in a few years back the United team had been in a dip for a while (Rummenigge, I think, essentially said that we were a shadow of the team we were before). Scolari would have to repeat that feat against a MUCH stronger United team if he wants to take our place. CR (he doesn’t deserve the 7 anymore) may not play with the passion he had before, but with a proper centre-forward brought in over the summer, he will neither be the focal point of our attacks either. With all respect, who’s gunna beat us? An immature Arsenal who have their own player problems? A Chelsea team in transition? A Liverpool team still made out of 90% recycled garbage? Even in Europe, who will realistically beat us? An equally in-transition Barcelona? A second-rate Real Madrid? A Milan team with as much vigour as an 80 year old with arthritis? A Juve team still suffering from an exodus of talent? An Inter team who couldn’t beat Liverpool? A Roma team who still have too small a squad and can’t attract any decent players? Of course, nothing is a given, and pride precedes a fall; but, the fact is that with or without CR, United are still the strongest team in Europe, with an average age a year older than Arsenal.

Tank: I think you hit the nail on the head with CR: he’s not malicious, and doesn’t mean to be a twat; he’s just a bit thick, that’s all. I mean, you can’t be the brightest candle in the Church if you want to leave this United team for Real Madrid, can you?

AK i think ur putting Man utd in on a pedistule. They are a great club but they can be beaten. And Man Utd spend as much money as all the other clubs.

ASR: Ok, maybe I am. But it is true that almost every other big club still are a few signings away from being “complete”. Usually, one can tell who will have a good season the next year based on glimpses of form the year before and I actually reckon Arsenal and Roma will have very good year: Arsenal will have had more time to gel together, and Roma were by far one of the best teams last year.

I wouldn’t count the end of this saga, Ronaldo has once again publicly admitted he doesn’t know about his near future and therefore contradicting Ferguson’s once again redundant statement that CR is staying at Old Trafford. It made sense that the portuguese made enough noise before speaking to Ferguson but even after a supposed fraternal talk between them a few weeks back, has still kept Ronaldo in his ambiguous position.

It seems to me that Ferguson wants to convince Real Ronaldo is not leaving in order to pocket as much money in the last minute as possible, im sure ferguson is aware how Madrid’s “unsettling tactics” have devaluated player’s market price in the past and he’s adamantly not going to allow that in this case. Its also to take into consideration that Real have barely given any notice of new signings which suggests the CR deal may be quite close, in inner talks of course. A few months ago, huntelaar, diego, pavluchenko were candidates for this season at the bernabeu and there is no contact information nowadays, this is quite rare if you ask me.

Ferguson promised to let him go if there were titles….what more can he expect from the kid, if his dream is to join los blancos, then let him go, take the cash and spend it on 3 or 4 players! The Fifa organization plus many public figures are backing CR, and Ferguson’s comment “from father to child” that joiing Real at his age would be the worst career option, in my opinion, CR should rebuttle saying “Dad, speaking about Franco today, is not the way to go”.

I don’t know where the rumour that SAF promised that he could go if he won titles, but I doubt he would ever say that. Why would he? He has a contract. Then again, I might be wrong; but until I find a credible source, I doubt it.
SAF may be trying to get more money out of Real, but, again, I doubt it. Why would United sell CR for (let’s say) £100m, when they could generate more than that in merchandise over 4 years? And why gift that amount to the team that is rivalling you in terms of global appeal? SAF, Gill, and the Glazers aren’t stupid!
Even if CR plays in the reserves, we might still generate money through him, and also deny giving Real a MASSIVE boost in revenues. And this is the crux of the CR saga: the bragging rights. Next year United will overtake Real as the richest club in the world (£30m from CL and Prem, and +£20m from new TV rights deal). It’s common knowledge that United ceded that position to Real because of Beckham, and a younger CR would only lead to the same scenario. Taking the place back from Real will help the Glazers generate more funds (sponsorship etc.). Also — and this is the most important — selling CR would be an admission by the club that Real are a greater team; that United are not the highest you can achieve: there is a step up that is called Real. Whether that is true or not is not important: it is what the people who run United believe, and they wont allow themselves to be contracted. It’s all about appearances: if they refuse to sell CR, then future players who might think about forcing their way out would think twice; it would convince potential signings who might otherwise lean towards Real that United are an equal.
9CL, you can talk all you want about Real’s influence over UEFA and FIFA, and even about Real and CR (somehow) taking a high ground over United and SAF, but it wont happen. You’ve shot yourselves in the foot over trying to underhandedly unsettle CR, and you deserve everything you get for your attitude to other clubs: your own moniker is a testament to that arrogance.

Ak, all you mention makes sense, but my reply is simple as CR wants to leave, RM is his dream, perhaps he prefers to live in spain…closer to his family etc etc. Not too sure players in the future in united will try to force themselves out because its not a common thing that real wants to pay almost 100 m for a player. Look at the kaka situation, Real left him alone because he publicly said he was comfortable at milan…ronaldo is the exact contrary, that’s why this saga continues.

Lets say Fergie obligates CR to stay against his will…worse for man u in any case, wouldnt you say. Look at ronaldinho or even eto nowadays. You say Real are arrogant…not anymore than man u or other major clubs who’ve also destabalized other players, hate the sport not the player.

I’m sorry, but you can’t say United are just as arrogant as Real. Good teams always have a slight arrogance about them (or at least a _perceived_ arrogance); but you can’t compare that to the attitude that comes out of Madrid. I’m sorry, but you just can’t. For example, how many times has a United official even mentioned Berbatov? Over the course of a year, I bet you could count them on one hand. Of course, that’s no proof that we haven’t unsettled him; but compare that to what Calderon and probably every Real player has publicly come out with. No comparison.

No doubt CR wants to leave and that Real is where he’d like to play; but that’s not enough: United have to be willing to sell him. Let’s say that SAF does force CR to stay against his will and CR’s form drops considerably. So what? He won’t be playing for us if he goes, so how would it be any different if we force him to stay and drop him to the bench? We get an unhappy player? So? He can cry himself to sleep with his millions for all we care. We have to pay his monumental wages? A drop in the ocean compared to what we lose by selling him. There is no benefit we gain by selling him, even if he never kicks a ball for United again. If it were anybody else, I would agree with you and say that a mega deal would probably be the better option; but for a _massively_ marketable player like CR it make more sense to keep him. Ronaldinho is in his 30s and Barca need the money to rebuild their squad. There’s also the fact that his poor form and the negative publicity of his weight issues will have damaged his image, and therefore his marketability. Barca’s revenue will be hit next year, but it would have been just as bad as if they’d have kept him. Sure, they will have given Milan a boost in revenues, but like I said, they needed the money; and, besides, Milan are in just as much (if not more) trouble than they are: there’s not much worry about them overtaking Barca with their financial troubles. Eto’o will never shift as many shirts as CR or Ronaldinho: the factors in his sale will not be as pronounced as for the other two. CR _will_ play for Real one day, but logically, I just don’t see it happening. Maybe you see something United would gain from by the transaction, but I don’t.

Sorry, correction: Ronaldinho is 28 (why did I say he was in his 30s!?). But that’s still on the slop downwards now, especially since it will take him at least a season to get back on form.
