Ladies and Gentlemen, I Give You the Best Football Player on Earth

By: Taylor Rockwell | December 1st, 2008

In a few hours from now, Cristiano Ronaldo will be crowned the World Player of the Year. The 23 year-old Ballon d’Or recipient is already the FIFPro World Player of the Year, and also took the top prizes from the Professional Footballers Association and the Football Writers last season. His 42 goal performance last season was overshadowed during the summer transfer window by a protracted transfer saga with King Franco FC.

For now, however, let us forget all of the negatives about this United winger, and instead take a moment to reflect on the true talent that is Cristiano Ronaldo. Say what you like about the boy, he’s got skills. So, to commemorate this historic day, I figured posting scattered videos would be a far better idea than me simply rambling on and on about all that the young, Portuguese goal-scorer has done for club and country. So sit back, relax, and try to ignore the crap techno music.

Skills Compilations

Early video of Ronaldo while he was still employed by Sporting. Nor surprisingly, his hair remains gelled.

Pretty decent vid of #7’s abilities. Once again I apologize for the techno.

Goal Compilations

My personal favorite Ronaldo goal… albeit one scored in a Charity Match against “The European XI”. Look how badly he beats Canizares… Hilarious…

Pretty sweet fan video of the same goal.

Top 10 Goals of the 2007-2008 Campaign… as recorded by a Portuguese YouTube fan.

Random Bits of Intrigue

Billy Wingrove v.s. C. Ronaldo

Ronaldo takes on Freestyle Footballer Billy Wingrove. Results are predictably impressive.

Ronaldo outruns a $1 million Bugatti Veyron. I nearly wet myself in amazement.

Classic Joga Bonito of Ronaldo v. Zalatan. The Swede just might get the better of the boy here. Not so much in Player of the Year voting… but in this Nike ad, perhaps. Suck on that one Juve/Scandanavia!

Feel free to post your own favorites in the comments section. I will probably be adding some throughout the day.

Extremely talented… I think thats what pisses me off most- he could be so much better if he had the mental strength and some character… I honestly think Messi is a better player but nobody else deserved this award as much as him. Dont want to start a debate here. Congrats but it still feels a bit empty to me…

I am split on this one… on the one hand I feel like he’s a 23 year old, so it makes sense that he doesn’t carry himself with the same style/grace a figure like Giggs does. So, were he to sign a new, LONGTERM deal for United, I would feel like he was maturing a bit/have more faith in him.

On the other hand, it seems like perhaps we’ve been seeing the real Ronaldo this season. The frustration (on the pitch) and the arrogance (on and off the pitch) have been fairly visible, and his actions this summer make me wish we would just sell him and buy someone reliable.

I just don’t really know what to think about the boy. For today, at least, I’m just glad he’s wearing red instead of white.

The free kick against Portsmouth last season was better. The best I’ve ever seen live.

The free kick against Portsmouth didn’t defy the laws of physics… did it manage to go right, then left, then straight, then right again? Granted, seeing it live was prolly pretty tight… nevertheless, the look on Canizares’ face is amazing in and of itself…

Something else that should be mentioned for those that always bring up Ronaldo’s goal count- He took the penalties while Torres did not… I doubt there would be much of a difference if you include that in the reasoning…

There is no doubt that Messi is a better player but the year Rnaldo had was better then anyone else’s. Messi plays with poise and intelligence while Ronaldo just relies on his technical abilities… People should feel sad when they see this guy because he can be so much more but some people have character and some dont…

momoney: sorry that you can’t come to grips with ronaldo being the best. he’s a winger for god’s sake. 42…for anyone is awesome…but for a winger? i mean come on. people should feel happy to watch a dude that is such a badass at such a young age. and as for the maturity thing, he’s still only 23…i think it will come…and since when do results (you know…like 42 goals worth of results, a champs league worth of results, a prem title worth of results) not make a team or a player better than another?

and taylor…NOTHINS GONNA EVAH KEEP EM DOWN!

MoMONEY, while I appreciate your comments and am always happy to have people visit the site, I feel like you’re making an Arsene Wenger comment. “Yes we lost, but we were obviously the better team.”

I just don’t see how you can say Messi is better when a RESOUNDING majority of the voters stated that he, in fact, wasn’t.

To me, a lot of these criticisms seem to be in line with how people feel about Barry Bonds. He’s obviously a gifted athlete who contributed a huge amount to the sport, but his personal choices/personality make people hate him/decidedly more critical of him. It happened with Kobe when he was accused of rape. It’s still the case with Terrell Owens in Dallas.

No one has more dislike/mistrust for Ronaldo then I do, but to say that he wasn’t the best player in the world over the past year seems like sour grapes.

Wow, never saw that free-kick in the UNICEF match. Which is weird because I watched alot of the match. Easily beter than the Pompey FK at Old Trafford. The freestyle tricks with that other dude are the shit..
