Is Detective Wenger Right?
By: Nick | January 23rd, 2007
So master tactician Arsene Wenger seems to have deduced (in his Inspector Clouseau garb no doubt) that United have a tendancy to run out of steam after seventy minutes. Allegedly due to the older legs in the team. Interesting point - so let’s look at the facts…
Premiership Defeats
United 0 Arsenal 1 (goal in 86th minute)
West Ham 1 United 0 (goal in 75th minute)
Arsenal 2 United 1 (goals in 83rd and 90+ minutes)
Champions League Defeats
FC Copenhagen 1 United 0 (goal in 73rd minute)
Celtic 1 United 0 (goal in 81st minute)
Well, it would seem that Arsene may be on to something. And considering he coined the phrase “I didn’t see it” - it’s even more impressive he stumbled upon this little nugget. In fact, out of the 28 goals conceded by United in all competitions this year - 12 have come after 70 minutes, with a couple more after 60. Impressive statistic hunting Mr. Wenger. Me? I need a nap after my efforts.
