David Beckham! Superstar! (Singing)
By: Nick | January 11th, 2007
Rightly or wrongly - until the day he dies (and probably long after) - David Beckham and Manchester United will be forever connected. Three less than glorious years at Madrid - plus whatever happens in So Cal will do nothing to dent this.
The popular thought amongst United fans, is that once a player leaves the club - the only place is down. This might be an arrogant attitude - but history has usually backed it up (Andrei Kanchelskis, Paul Ince, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville, Keith Gillespie etc. etc.) Even Mark Hughes came back after struggling at Barcelona.
It’s hard to argue that Beckham’s career didn’t swiftly go down the toilet once he left Old Trafford. At least on the pitch. He obviously maintained his ability to sell shirts in Asia - but his footballing ability alarmingly faded. Three trophy-less seasons at Real Madrid, and some dodgy World Cup performances, are what he mustered, away from the club who raised him to global superstar status - and then swiflty booted him out - once his “brand” grew above all of his exploits on the pitch.
Now, that “brand” is about to pack its bags and fly (probably on a private jet) to the City of Angels. Who knows what will happen once he gets there. Bums will be put on seats when he plays on the road - and ESPN will likely show every single Galaxy match for the next five years. Or until Beckham gets bored, and goes to take free-kicks in Dubai for a billion dollars.

Maybe it wasn’t the fact that he left Man U that made the difference. Maybe he was already on the downside of his career and washed up. If Ronaldo left Man U right now, do you think his career would take a nose dive? Personally, I always thought Beckham was overrated. By the way, how many English players actually do well when they leave England?
