Could Mourinho replace Sir Alex at Old Trafford?

By: Wayne Farry | October 20th, 2008

Could Mourinho make a shock move to OT?

Since the recent announcement from Jose Mourinho that he wants to return to England when his Inter contract expires, it’s got me thinking. Mourinho couldn’t be hoping for a return to England with United, could he?

In my opinion, yes! Since the departure of Carlos Queiroz to Portugal, and the subsequent proof that he is, indeed, not a great manager it’s hard to see a more qualified man for the role and indeed, one who’d have the confidence to take up what will in my opinion be the most difficult job in football history, replacing Sir Alex Ferguson.

Mourinho has made a good start at Inter, most recently with a stunning victory away to Roma. His stock continues to rise, as if it needed to, and he looks the most qualified man for the job. Most managers would crumble under the pressure of taking the reins after Ferguson, but I feel that Mourinho would love the attention, and the pressure.

The one question in my view is whether he could keep United playing beautiful football. For the majority of his time at Chelsea they played some dire football, but with occasional moments of great stuff. If he has United playing the same way he’ll find it tough. But if he can continue the tradition of United playing flowing football I can see no reason why he wouldn’t succeed.

I personally would love to see him take over. He and Sir Alex didn’t always see eye-to-eye but there’s tonnes of mutual respect there. I’d like to know what you folks think. Do you think he’d consider the United job? Do you think United would consider him for the job? And would United fans accept him as their manager? This one certainly would.

Since Mourinho left Chelsea, I have thought his next job in England would be with United.

    Not me…

What kind of manager announces their intentions to move 2/3 months after taking a new job? As you have pointed out, the style of football would also be a concern. Most important to me…I can think of plenty of other candidates that in a couple of years may tick all of the boxes in terms of managerial ability but have more of a link to united. Steve Bruce is coming along nicely as is Roy Keane and Mark Hughes, and a possible wildcard – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He is already the reserve coach after only a year in our backroom staff, Ferguson and others have said he has great managerial potential, and we have been told that the club / Ferguson would favour an internal appointment. Who knows where he or any of these managers may be when Sir Alex comes to retire.

United has only been playing beautiful football for the past two seasons. Prior to that they have played both “winning football” and “attacking football”. I think that while it is true that Queiroz has yet to prove himself as a manager – he was the best assistant that Sir Alex had and – more important – he had a huge influence on the beautiful football phase United are now in. He significantly influenced player acquisitions and style of play. I really wish he’d fail with Portugal and get back to United pronto. He and Sir Alex were a great combo. As for Mourinho – you are quite right in being worried – Mourinho wants results only. As such – he would never be as great as Sir Alex. For all of Sir Alex’s simple-minded tactics over the years – he was atleast brave and entertaining with his swashbuckling attacking football; a brand of football that also won.

    Sorry for going off topic…

Forget about the asking price but I do believe that Fergie should give Tevez more playing time rather than keeping him warm on the bench. When he first came last season he did look a bit rusty but look what happen later?

Ronaldo may have scored 30 plus goals but Tevez scored some critical goal (last minute ones against Spurs and Blackburn) that allowed United to capture the Premiership and Champions League.

I have just posted an article related to this story by stating my point of view on this whole matter. I would appreciate if you check it out and perhaps leave your thoughts/opinions on the comment box.

I sort of agree with all the fuss about the name Wayne….there is a reason why fans are hurt when you call the club with that name..there is a history to that….(search it…it’s easy to find)..if you want to adamant that’s fine…but United sounds much better too ;)

In three years time you would be looking for a WORLD CLASS long term replacement for fergie and who would fit the billing better than mourinho? I dont agree with the likes of Keane and Hughes because I just dont think that in three years time they would be able to handle that kind of job. Mourinho won the Champions League with a team that cost less than Sunderlands and Man City’s might I add. And conrary to popular belief about his tactics, Porto played good assured football.

who’s to say the special one won’t get bored and move on from us after a year or so… he is too self centered to stand up to United’s History. In a perfect world I would love to see Ole or Roy in there, even Bruce, but let’s see how this plays out, if those boys can get up to par in time…I don’t see Mourinho’s heart in it, just his banking account #’s.
… and thank you for cutting the ManYoo crap Wyane.
