United Get Their Kicks in at Last
By: Nick | July 17th, 2007
After a long Summer of transfer activity, player weddings and me desperately trying to fill this blog with somewhat decent content, not even a few leaking nuclear drums could prevent United kicking off the appetizer to their title defense in Japan.
Ninety or so minutes later, almost 58 thousand witnessed a 2-2 draw in Saitama, against the J-League’s second best team, the Urawa Red Diamonds.
Inevitably, some reports are calling the result “disappointing” — but at the end of the day it was merely a glamorous tune up.

The unspoken sadness of our not earning a coveted Double last season will throb in our hearts like a diamond we accidentally swallowed after becoming too close to as a child, and the resultant indigestion is painful and long-lived. We tour Asia and play these interesting teams while Chelsea take part in the ridiculously named “World Series of Soccer” (a tournament involving just four teams, three of them from either Asia or the northern Americas) and the season is beginning to rev up and throttles are being strangled as the lights threaten to turn green and the diesel fumes from the buses and trains and cars and planes and players’ coaches begins to fill the air, and autograph hunters throng and cheer, while the players themselves become ever richer and more convinced than ever of their own immortality. The world has become a smaller place than ever these past few years, and we shouldn’t be surprised if it all comes caving in on us with a resounding bang…
