The Failure to Beat Reading — 10 Personal Observations
By: Nick | August 13th, 2007I’m sure if you saught the collective mood of United fans this morning, you’d likely find a somewhat somber lot — and for good reason. So what can we take from the match after the lack of goals/loss of Rooney double whammy? Let’s see…
1. John O’Shea’s versatility is a very valuable asset to the squad — yet his employment as an emergency striker meant we were firmly in the sh!t.
2. I just read on Football365 that yesterday’s two dropped points were half as many as we dropped at home for the first seven months of last season. This makes me more glum.
3. A Cristiano Ronaldo free-kick seems to me more hit and hope than anything else. I believe a little placement might prove more fruitful.
4. Why does the opposition keeper more often than not seem to play an absolute blinder at Old Trafford?
5. The health of Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Louis Saha could prove pivotal this season — we certainly could have used either one on the bench yesterday.
6. The white strips on the back of the new shirts look a bit crap to me.
7. Somewhere at Nike, the design team behind Rooney’s much vaunted new boots are not having a particularly good day.
8. Patrice Evra really should be employed strictly at left back.
9. More than a few United fans probably uttered the words “Ruud would have been the man to crack that stubborn Reading defence” after everybody else failed to crack the stubborn Reading defence.
10. Edwin Van der Sar will rarely have had a more uneventful match in his long career.
Yes, it was only the first game of the season — but now games two and three (the always tricky visits the Portsmouth and Manchester City) take on extra importance.

Reading is a good team that don’t get a lot of credit. They worked hard for that draw. I believe last season they also had United’s number as well.
